MATERIALS

To avoid nasty surprises, it is vital that you understand your materials.

Ink

Ink differs from watercolour. Ink is a liquid with a pigment or dye-based colouring used for painting, drawing and printmaking purposes. It may be waterproof, water-resistant or water-soluble. Watercolours are pigments held together with binders that are diluted with water to use. They are always water-soluble.

Many drawing inks will fade once exposed to light. While this is not important for sketchbook work, if you wish to eventually display your portraits, ensure the ink is UV resistant. As a general guide, pigment inks will not fade with time while dye-based inks will. Just because something is waterproof does not mean it is not fugitive. Most drawing inks will fade, while Indian inks will not – both are waterproof. Fountain pen inks often act in beautiful ways when used to paint and draw; unfortunately many are fugitive (i.e. they will fade when exposed to light).
